Grape Varieties

Cabernet Franc

A red grape variety with white juice

This red grape variety is one of the main varieties grown in the Loire Valley to produce red or rosé wines in Chinon, Bourgueil and Saumur.

It offers fruity and velvety wines of great character which have aromas of strawberries and blackberries. When cultivated on tufa soils, the grape variety produces full-bodied wines with beautiful structure.

It is used alone or in combination with Cabernet Sauvignon for the production of Saumur Puy Notre Dame or Saumur Rouge.

Cabernet Sauvignon

A red grape variety with white juice

Cabernet Sauvignon is used in the production of red Saumur in blending with Cabernet Franc. It brings high tannins, structure, richness and colour to the wine with aromas of blackcurrants and violet.

Cabernet Sauvignon is characterised by small bunches and small berries with colourful thick skins.

Chenin

A white grape variety with white juice

Chenin is a main grape variety used to produce white wines in Loire Valley that are dry, mellow or effervescent with aromas of dried fruits, citrus, apricot.

Although difficult to master, the grape variety produces some truly exceptional white wines. In the good years when the noble rot reaches the vines and it is possible to lead the grapes to full maturity, remarkable sweet white wines are achieved from such harvests.

The Chenin grape expresses itself fully on tuffeau, bringing structure to the wine. The natural ability of the grape variety to foam makes it the ideal base grape for the production of sparkling wines like Saumur Brut.

Chardonnay

A white grape variety with white juice

A Burgundy grape variety par excellence, the Chardonnay grape vines thrive in clay-limestone soils.

It is used at Château de Beauregard, where it is blended with Chenin and Cabernet Franc grape varieties for the preparation of fine bubbles to produce the Raw Saumur.

Bringing roundness, finesse, liveliness to wines, the Chardonnay grape variety is characterised by aromas of acacia flowers, white fruits, almonds.
